| Forget about replicating a studio practice when you are at home. You’ll never have the same experience at home as you do in the studio. I HAVE a studio in my home and my practice is not the same as going to a studio class! 🤣 |
| Most of us have been forced to stay at home this year and haven given home workouts/yoga a try. I have been working hard for a long time to convince people that a home practice has many benefits, and now everyone has experienced it first hand, whether they intended to or not. First of all, no, a home practice isn’t the same experience as a studio practice so don’t even compare the two. At home, you have kids, pets, spouses, laundry, cleaning, you name it! Potential distractions everywhere. So you must do your best to set yourself up for success. Set aside a time when there are less distractions. Let everyone in your household know that this is your time to do yoga, ask them to be respectful. Hopefully, they will respect that time and space, but there is a good chance your kids may want to watch or join in. So the second thing to know is that you are trying to set yourself up for success, but you need to be flexible and patient. Maybe you only get the physical part of the practice done and the mental part wasn’t there that day because your kids were asking a ton of questions throughout your practice. Maybe you were able to quiet them for a bit to join you for some breathing. Whatever your practice looked like, it was okay, it was normal for a home practice, and at least you got something done. In yoga, our practice teaches us to be a more patient person, more kind, more loving, and to show more grace and flexibility in scenarios that are different from expectations. In the long run, yoga teaches us to let go of expectations. Each day you should approach your practice without expectations or judgement. You should approach it as if never having done yoga before. Because each day our practice is unique, a different experience each time. So whether you’re in the studio or at home, you step on your mat and you just do your best. That’s what we’re all doing in this crazy time, isn’t it? Just doing our best. There is magic in a home practice. It’s different than the magic in the studio. But it’s there and it’s wonderful and you’ll just have to find it. |
