Create the Perfect Yoga Space at Home

For most of the country right now, people are having to find ways to exercise at home. Fortunately, there are lots of great resources and most gyms and yoga studios have been able to quickly transition to online formats. But, maybe you’ve tried some of these online formats and found that doing yoga at home just isn’t the same feel as in a studio. So let me give you some tips and tricks to creating the perfect space for your home “studio.”

The first step is finding a place in your house (or maybe a garage or shop) where you can roll out your mat and be somewhat unbothered by the things in your house, living or otherwise. It’s great if you can find a space away from your phone, your family, your pets. Now, that may not be completely possible for everyone, but just do your best with what your circumstances are, knowing that having some peace and quiet is the goal if possible. You can set up in your bedroom, or the guest bedroom, a walk in closet, laundry room, kitchen, or living room. Wherever you choose to roll out your mat just make sure you have a bit of space around you.

Secondly, create some atmosphere. If you prefer to have a warm room to practice in then place a space heater next to you. Maybe even warm the room with the heater prior to starting your practice. Dim the lighting in your room or maybe light a couple candles. Perhaps set up in the sunshine or even outside as the weather gets nicer.

Take advantage of being alone and not around a group of people. For instance, it’s usually frowned up to bring essential oils into a studio, as not everyone is a fan of oils or the particular smells you are fond of. However, essential oils are a great addition to a yoga practice. Place a few drops of lavender oil in your palms and rub together, then cupping your hands in front of your face, take a few deep breaths before starting. Also, along these lines, you can have the chance to take a class without the distraction of music in the background. It’s wonderful to be in a quiet room with nothing but the sound of your breathing. However, if you are the type who really needs music you can at least play whatever music you like.

Remember to always make the practice your own. What is it your body needs? Maybe there is something in a class that you really love and would like to spend more time doing. Pause the video and continue later when you’re ready. Rewind and rewatch if something is confusing or you’d like a little more practice with it. Having a home practice really puts you in control of what you give yourself each time you step on the mat.

Most importantly, be flexible. If you are interrupted, despite your best efforts, be patient and know that you can always return back to your mat later. Appreciate whatever moments of quiet and solitude you had.
